I was not necessarily thinking about what it meant [in the bigger picture] for it to end that way, especially for it being one of the first big gay male relationships in daytime. Being gay has been ingrained into Lucas’s story, but not the sole focus, which allows for richer, more authentic storytelling — a fact for which Hansis has expressed his appreciation.

They use their lived experience to bring depth and authenticity to their characters, which makes them more compelling and entertaining to watch, as well as enriches the General Hospital canvas.

To catch their performances and keep up with all the drama, watch General Hospital weekdays on ABC and Hulu.

As a matter of fact, Soap Hub just published an article about Hansis being one of the recasts to breathe new life into the character he is playing.

Playing It Proud

Lucas Jones and Luke Snyder are not the only gay characters that Hansis has played.

During Hansis’s 2005-10 run in Oakdale, Luke had two major love interests. As described on her IMDB, “she is passionate politically about her community and is outspoken about visibility and diversity in the industry.”

In 2024, she co-wrote and starred in the film short Claude, which was directed by Finola Hughes (General Hospital’s Anna Devane).

On General Hospital, Brad Cooper has been pushing hard to work his way back into the heart of his ex-husband, Lucas Jones.

James has brought grace, compassion, and a sense of humor to her portrayal of Dr. Randolph, who fans would definitely like to see more of in the future.

After graduating from the theater acting program at Ryerson University, James expanded her talents to become a writer, producer, and activist. Hansis also praised Maura West for her positive energy, professionalism, and ability to keep the fast-paced environment enjoyable on set.

State Of Mind

When Hansis appeared on co-star Maurice Benard’s podcast, State of Mind, the actor opened up about having panic attacks, one of which happened right as he was about to shoot a scene.

Achondo has a clear drive and passion to help others. And I know for a fact that it changed some points of view from fans at the time, who would write to me about it. I’m really sorry we killed him off. He shared that Carly sometimes finds Lucas’s protective warnings frustrating, but that’s exactly what makes the relationship real.

His authenticity and openness have only deepened his connection with fans.

Sibling Snark

Hansis particularly enjoys the dynamic between Lucas and Carly. “I think it’s very true to how siblings talk to each other, and it’s very fun to play,” he explained, noting their mix of love and sarcastic banter.

They are the worst, and having you in my corner really helped.”

He’s kidding, we’re pretty sure. Be love, be the change you seek in the world. He acts with an ease that makes Lucas feel charming, relatable, and real.

Lucas is a character with a rich history and deep ties to Port Charles, and Hansis’s portrayal is giving the character the complexity and nuance he deserves.

And I get it! Terry Randolph (Cassandra James)

Actor, writer, producer, and activist Cassandra James made history when she joined General Hospital in 2018. He not only earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Elementary Education, but also a Master’s of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Coming in to daytime, I was not from a family that was a daytime-watching family. “Thanks for making the last 16 months bearable. But prior to joining the GH ranks, the actor played another legacy gay character: Luke Snyder, the son of heroine Lily Walsh Snyder on As the World Turns. The duo’s 4-year marriage crumbled in 2020 after Brad was busted for the years-long deception he perpetrated on his husband (and others): passing off Nelle and Michael’s son, little Wiley, as the child he and Lucas had been poised to adopt when the real baby in question (who was Willow and Shiloh’s biological offspring) tragically died shortly after his birth.

Van Hansis stepped into the role of Lucas last year, long after Brad and Lucas’s union ended in divorce.
