Marktgasse Hotel

The Marktgasse Hotel is a great option for travelers looking for a hotel with a central location.

For timing, late June is the sweet spot. It’s a little further away from the city center and the gay Zurich scene, but the compromise is that you have fabulous views of Lake Zurich and the city’s rooftops.

It’s also the hotel’s cheapest room with an average nightly rate of 200 CHF, whereas the bigger double rooms go for 400-550 CHF per night. As the wealthiest city in Europe and with its privileged location along the Limmat river and at the idyllic Lake Zurich with view of the snow-covered mountains, Zurich belongs to the cities with the highest quality of life in the world (but also with the highest cost of living).

The diverse cultural life of Zurich also includes the clubs in Zurich-West and the Street Parade (the world's largest technoparade) every year in August.

Zurich already was raised to the level of a city in the Early Middle Ages, in 1262 it became a free imperial city and in 1351 a member of the Swiss Confederation.

Days run on lake swims, museum time, and walks along the Limmat; nights start late and stay central, especially around Old Town and the main station. There’s a tram station right in front of the hotel, which can help you get around the city quickly. You get a clean, compact city with good public transport and plenty of English in service settings.

It’s located in the center of Zurich’s old town, so you’ll be perfectly located for exploration of the city’s best tourist attractions and landmarks.

Staying at this hotel means dining in fabulous restaurants and being taken on boat rides, which is a solid compromise for having to travel a bit to the closest gay bar. There will be some people around to possibly hook up with but you also have to deal with being around a bunch of drunk strangers which can be fun at times but can also get old.

Plus many reading this may not be totally ‘out’ yet so they may not feel comfortable in that type of setting just yet.

The only downside is that you won’t be adjacent to the city’s best gay bars and nightclubs, but most will still be within easy walking distance.

Because this is a fairly new hotel, the room rates are still surprisingly affordable, at least for a hotel with a location in central Zurich.
