Elena Delle Donne should feel empowered to be herself after winning the WNBA MVP twice, but she didn’t. According to this study led by Risa Isard and Dr. E. Nicole Melton Black WNBA players are severely underrepresented in the media even when they’re the most-accomplished players in the league.

[Black WNBA players] won 80% of postseason awards, including: Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player of the Year, and Sixth Woman of the Year.

The intra-team romance between Dijonai Carrington and NaLyssa Smith was sadly broken up by a mid-season trade that sent Smith to the Aces, but Carrington is still holding down the fort in Dallas. This Sparks team is in no way a playoff contender, but if Brink is fully healthy I think they could end up surprising me.

The gay news isn’t all bad though, Emma Cannon has the cutest family in the entire universe and just seeing their photos gives me baby fever.

Seattle Storm

This Storm team was plagued by drama in the offseason.

Byears was unapologetically queer and was never closed off about her sexuality.

“I’ve never been in the closet about nothin’,” Byears said to ESPN in 2006. And I think there’s just maybe this intimidation factor with that. She had a breakout season last year and I expect her to continue being just as delightful to watch this year.

She is joined by queer star Alyssa Thomas, wife of now-teammate DeWanna Bonner.

They’re joined by former MVPs Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart, both of whom have wives of their own. How much the media covers you. Rickea Jackson is one of the most dynamic players out there with equally good fashion in the tunnel walks. Kayla McBride is a great shooter and overall athlete. This is why pronouns matter. Those 25 player are just a sampling of the best players across the league’s 25 year history, and doesn’t take into consideration of all the players that have ever suited up.

These players now have the luxury of not only playing professional basketball in the United States, but that the environment has improved; enough that they don’t have to hide the fact that they have a wife or girlfriend from their fans. The rookie addition of Hailey Van Lith only makes it more exciting.

Los Angeles Sparks

There are only two gay players on this team, but their straight players tell a fun story!

Led by Unrivaled founder Napheesa Collier, they could be really good!

This team’s gay players also make a huge difference on the court for the Lynx. Ty Harris is in a relationship with a woman named Autumn who makes adorable couples TikToks of the two of them you need to check out.

“Every day walking down the hallway it was like: ‘She’s gay. That ratio represents progress and we expect this list to grow as the LGBTQ community is more widely accepted around the world.

As mentioned in this Washington Post article, queer athletes can be found in relationships with one another. On the downside, Natasha Howard is a bit past her prime and Sydney Colson is far from an ideal backup point guard.

People are quick to talk about it, judge it, put it down. For my purposes, “Out” means confirmed by the player either in an interview or on their social media. The true percentage of WNBA players that identify as gay or lesbian will always be determined by how accepting society of differences in sexuality and gender, and thus, how comfortable players are of coming out of the closet in the public eye.

That’s the case with our list too.

No matter how masculine presenting someone is, I will not be speculating!

Las Vegas Aces

The Aces are a very good team and as long as A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray are both there they’ll always have a shot at the championship. Literally. Unfortunately Connecticut is also the straightest team in the league this season.
