An inventive animated short that began as Yizhen Hou’s thesis project, We Cool? has since grown into a festival favorite and a viral hit on YouTube.
Spanning genres from romantic comedy to animation, and formats from intimate drama to bold satire, they each bring a distinctive lens to LGBTQ+ lives. He must sleep with her to “fix” his homosexuality.

FAG
One of the slightly longer gay short films at 35 minutes, FAG is a gay film about homophobia.
Thomas, a seventeen-year-old-boy, is attracted to Esteban, another boy from highschool.
This one hits hard and will leave you aghast.

Pretty Boy
Pretty Boy explores the sad and dangerous reality of the lengths some parents will go to to try and ‘correct’ their children.
After his devoutly religious father finds some gay magazines in his sons room, Sean (the son) is taken to a motel and is given a prostitute for his 18th birthday.
Using animal characters adds an extra layer of originality, making We Cool? stand out not only as a queer animation but also as an outstanding piece of cinema. The film holds a 97 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They remind us that, even in the face of adversity, love, courage, and hope always find a way to shine.
As we celebrate the outstanding LGBTQ+ short films of 2022, it’s important to remember that behind every great film is a supportive community and ample funding opportunities.

Tank Fairy – which has a run time of just 9 minutes – made SXSW’s Narrative Short screening category in their 2022 lineup. Short films in particular hold a special place in this conversation as they have the unique ability to tell powerful and thought-provoking stories from a variety of perspectives.
The film is distributed by A24 and released in cinemas in the UK in late November, with a US release to follow.
